America
paintings 2003-2004

America was wholly inspired from a magazine I found at an estate sale called Woman’s World, published in 1953. A classic mid-century publication for the aspiring modern-day homemaker.

Like most admirers of kitsch, Americana, bygone eras, idealization, feminism, and irony I succeeded to adore that magazine. So I decided to pay a little tribute to it by creating a series of paintings called America. I wanted to accentuate what I saw lurking in the negative spaces between layouts and typesets, I wanted to paint the charade of American exaltation, the dark joy of our perverse dreams.
